The Past Simple tense in English helps us talk about actions that started and finished in the past. It’s crucial for describing events, stories, and what happened at a specific time. We use it for completed actions, whether they happened yesterday, last week, or years ago. For example, I visited my grandparents last weekend. Bei den meisten Verben wird -ed to form the Past Simple (regular verbs), like walked oder played. However, many common verbs are irregular and change their form completely, such as go becoming went. Mastering this tense is fundamental for A2 English learners to communicate clearly about past experiences and is a key part of the A2 Key (KET) exam.

What is the Past Simple and When Do We Use It?

The Past Simple tense describes actions or events that happened at a specific time in the past and are now finished. It’s like telling a story about something that is already over.

We use the Past Simple for:

  • Completed actions in the past: She finished her homework an hour ago.
  • A series of completed actions: He woke up, ate breakfast, and left for work.
  • Past habits or routines: When I was a child, I played outside every day.

Common time expressions used with the Past Simple include:

  • Yesterday
  • Last week/month/year
  • Two days ago
  • In 2020
  • When I was young

How Do We Form the Past Simple? (Regular Verbs)

Most verbs in English are regular. To form the Past Simple for these verbs, we simply add -ed zur Grundform des Verbs.

  • Walkwalked
  • Playplayed
  • Startstarted

There are a few spelling rules to remember:

  • Verben, die auf -e: Add only -d. Livelived, Arrivearrived.
  • Verbs ending in consonant + -y: Ändern -y zu -i and add -ed. Studystudied, Trytried.
  • Verbs ending in vowel + -y: Just add -ed. Playplayed, Enjoyenjoyed.
  • Verbs ending in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) with a stressed short vowel: Double the last consonant and add -ed. Stopstopped, Planplanned.

What About Irregular Verbs?

Many common verbs in English are irregular. This means they do not follow the -ed rule for the Past Simple. Their forms change in different ways.

You need to learn these irregular verbs by heart. There are no simple rules for them, but many are used very often.

  • Gowent
  • Seesaw
  • Havehad
  • Eatate
  • Readread (same spelling, different pronunciation)

The more you read and listen to English, the easier it will be to remember these forms.

How Do We Make Questions and Negatives in the Past Simple?

To make questions and negative sentences in the Past Simple, we use the auxiliary verb did (oder didn't for negatives) and the base form of the main verb.

  • Positive: I played football yesterday.
  • Negative: I didn't play football yesterday. (NOT I didn't played)
  • Question: Did you play football yesterday? (NOT Did you played)

Remember, the main verb always returns to its base form after did oder didn't.

Häufige Fehler bei Spanischsprechern

Spanish speakers sometimes make specific mistakes with the Past Simple:

  • Using was/were with main verbs: Do not say I was went to the shop. The correct form is I went to the shop. Remember, was/were is only for the verb 'to be' or continuous tenses.
  • Not using the base form after did/didn't: Falsch: Did you saw him? Richtig: Did you see him? The auxiliary did carries the past tense, so the main verb stays in its base form.
  • Confusing regular and irregular verbs: Avoid saying I goed to the party. The correct irregular form is I went to the party.
  • Over-using the Past Simple for actions that continue: If an action started in the past and continues now, use the Present Perfect, not the Past Simple. Incorrect: I lived here for five years (and I still live here). Richtig: I have lived here for five years.
